Week 2: your checklist
Quick answer
What should I actually do at about 2 weeks old?
The adrenaline from week one is gone; this is the real grind. 7 concrete tasks below, grouped by what they're for.
What's going on this week
Most babies have regained their birth weight by around now (AAP), a good marker your pediatrician will check at the two-week visit if one is scheduled. Your partner's body is still healing; the postpartum bleeding pattern typically continues to taper but can still surprise you. Sleep deprivation compounds for both of you this week rather than easing.
Your checklist
Night-shift logistics
- Reassess the overnight rotation now that the newborn haze has worn off a little; adjust if one of you is quietly drowning.
Feeding support
- If pumping is part of the plan, learn the storage rules (fridge vs. freezer windows) so you can manage supply without asking every time.
Appointments & paperwork
- Confirm the SSN card and birth certificate are actually moving through the system or have arrived; call if you have not heard anything.
- Check your health insurer's newborn-enrollment deadline; most plans require adding a newborn within 30 to 60 days of birth or coverage can lapse retroactively (verify your plan's exact window directly, since this varies).
Visitor management
- If out-of-town family is planning a longer stay, set the length and the chores expectation before they arrive, not after.
Partner care
- Take a full outdoor walk together, even 10 minutes, if she is medically cleared for it.
- Watch for any warning sign discussed in our postpartum guide and say something the same day, not "later."
