Week 4: your checklist
Quick answer
What should I actually do at about 1 month old?
The one-month checkup is a good moment to get everyone's questions answered at once. 7 concrete tasks below, grouped by what they're for.
What's going on this week
Many pediatric practices schedule a one-month well visit around now, covering weight, feeding, and a vaccine dose per the CDC's recommended schedule. Sleep is still fragmented for most families at this point; a loose day-night rhythm is only starting to form for many babies.
Your checklist
Night-shift logistics
- Keep the rotation going; four weeks in is a common point for one partner to start quietly over-functioning. Check in honestly.
Feeding support
- If returning to work is on the horizon, start researching pump-at-work logistics (a private space, a mini fridge) now, well ahead of the actual return.
Appointments & paperwork
- Attend the one-month well visit if you can; bring your own questions, not just hers.
- Confirm the newborn is actually added to your insurance plan, not just submitted; call to verify if you have not gotten confirmation.
Visitor management
- If visitors keep asking to hold the baby during nap windows, it is fine to say the nap comes first.
Partner care
- Ask specifically how she is sleeping and feeling, not just how the baby is doing; the questions get different answers.
- Revisit the postpartum warning-signs guide together; some signs matter more in week 4 to 6 than week 1.
